We received an email this morning from Duane L. of Prior Lake, MN. He saw a white squirrel yesterday outside of his home. Unfortunately, the white squirrel was too far away as to determine if this was an albano squirrel. If not albano, then I would guess that it to be a Gray squirrel with the leucisim dominent recessive gene. Similar to Brevard’s White Squirrels.
According to MN Department of Natural Resourses, “The gray squirrel is one of Minnesota’s most common wildlife species. It is often seen in backyards, parks and wooded rural areas. Because of its thick furry tail, it is sometimes called bushytail.” Click here to read more.
Is this common in Minneapolis
This was the first report of a white squirrel sighting in the Prior Lake area.
We have a few different ones in our neighborhood in Farmington, MN. I have pictures of one, looks albino.
Yes it is. I see them in Bloomington Minnesota all the time.
I saw a white squirrel this afternoon, December 4, 2020, at Baker Park Reserve in Minnesota.
Natalie,
Thanks for letting us know.
We have had white squirrels in Prior Lake since at least the 90s. I remember one showing up in our neighborhood in the late 90s and we have had them in our area ever since. I think we have 3 in our immediate area at this time.
We have had another person report on seeing white squirrels in Prior Lake.
We saw a white squirrel today (March 1st, 2021) in our backyard. We live in Chaska, MN. So happy and surprised to see such a rare squirrel. Wanted to capture the pictures, but I lost sight of it after a minute.
Hi Sushma, Thank you for the update. If you happen to get a better look at it next time can you let us know if it has red eyes (albano) or brown eyes (leucistic).
Confirmed White Albino Squirrel has been living in an Oak Tree (1 year will be July 2021) She had only 1 litter last year 2020. She moved her 3 babies into the oak in our front yard. Yes she has the “Pink” Eyes. She has been named “Momma Casper”. I typically will provide her with either Almonds or Walnuts “Salt Free”. She will come when I call her, we respect each other in some cases she has come as close within 4 feet. I have “NO” intentions of attempting any hand feeding. It appears she could be pregnant as of 4-24-2021. Guessing she could give birth within the next 3 weeks or less. I see Momma Every Day – she makes me smile!!! I look forward to seeing her Babies!
I’ve got a white squirrel in my tree. I think it’s nesting there, I’ve been seeing it regularly. If I could I’d have posted a picture.
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your comment. Our Facebook page is where you can post photo’s. Unfortunately we do not have the ability to upload submitted photo’s on the website. facebook.com/whitesquirrelinstitute.
We’ve seen a new, vividly white squirrel in our yard recently (July 2022, western MN), as well as one that my husband describes as whiteish-grey. They are frequent visitors to our strawberry patch and pear tree. I’m not sure how long they will last here though because we also hear and see eagles, hawks and owls on a regular basis, and the white one really pops out visually.
Victoria,
Thank you for your comment. We have one of the largest white squirrel colonies in the US and are still thriving despite all the flying dangers:) Fingers crossed that your white squirrel will learn how to hide from those threats.
Katy
We have, what I believe, is an albino squirrel living in our backyard in Burnsville. It is a joy to watch and was running around my raised flower box next to the house this morning.
Are you in Burnsville NC. Interesting we have never had a report of an Albino squirrel in NC
I have seen a white squirrel and a black squirrel in my yard. The white one is very pretty with a thick bushy tail. It has red/pink eyes. It also has a little brown on the tip on its nose so I’m not sure if it is albino. I have a picture if you are interested that shows the pink eyes and the brown tip on its nose.
We have had about 6 albino squirrels in Brooklyn Park for the last 5 years.
