We received an email this morning from Duane L. of Prior Lake, MN. He saw a white squirrel yesterday outside of his home. Unfortunately, the white squirrel was too far away as to determine if this was an albano squirrel. If not albano, then I would guess that it to be a Gray squirrel with the leucisim dominent recessive gene. Similar to Brevard’s White Squirrels.
According to MN Department of Natural Resourses, “The gray squirrel is one of Minnesota’s most common wildlife species. It is often seen in backyards, parks and wooded rural areas. Because of its thick furry tail, it is sometimes called bushytail.” Click here to read more.
Is this common in Minneapolis
This was the first report of a white squirrel sighting in the Prior Lake area.
Yes it is. I see them in Bloomington Minnesota all the time.
I saw a white squirrel this afternoon, December 4, 2020, at Baker Park Reserve in Minnesota.
Natalie,
Thanks for letting us know.
We saw a white squirrel today (March 1st, 2021) in our backyard. We live in Chaska, MN. So happy and surprised to see such a rare squirrel. Wanted to capture the pictures, but I lost sight of it after a minute.
Hi Sushma, Thank you for the update. If you happen to get a better look at it next time can you let us know if it has red eyes (albano) or brown eyes (leucistic).
